The Delicious Art of Celebrating Simply Being

Dearest friend,

Happiness is a habit I am developing.

Happiness is created, not waited for.

This is Acceptance Statement 3 from Women for Sobriety, and it perfectly captures something I am learning: we do not need to wait for an occasion before we create joy.

Sometimes we can simply celebrate being.

Being alive. Being present. Being together. Having nowhere more important to go and nothing more important to accomplish.

Being is a perfectly good reason

We are accustomed to celebrating birthdays, promotions, holidays and achievements. We bring out the pretty glasses when the calendar tells us the day is important.

But what if the day itself is enough?

What if time with friends and family is the occasion? What if having time to rest, laugh and enjoy one another is already worthy of celebration?

There is something quietly wonderful about gathering your friends and family with no agenda beyond being together. It reminds us that joy does not have to be earned by accomplishing something first.

Elevate the experience

Celebrating being does not require an elaborate plan. A few thoughtful touches can make an ordinary day feel cared for.

Bring out the pretty glasses. Add fruit, sparkling water and plenty of ice. Arrange the food instead of leaving everything in its packaging. Put on music that gives the afternoon its own soundtrack. Add soft blankets, comfortable cushions, flowers or whatever makes the space feel inviting.

None of it needs to be expensive. These small details simply say:

This day matters. These people matter. This moment matters.

That is how happiness becomes a habit. We stop waiting for joy to arrive and begin creating places where it can settle in.

Give yourselves time to simply be

We organize so much of our time around an activity. We meet for dinner. We buy tickets. We attend an event. We complete an itinerary.

But sometimes the loveliest plan is to gather somewhere comfortable and be together long enough for everyone to soften.

Talk. Nap. Eat when you are hungry. Put your feet up. Wander away for a while and come back. Laugh until the story gets better with every telling. Let there be silence without rushing to fill it.

Time with friends and family does not always need entertainment. Sometimes it just needs time and room to breathe.

Simply being can become everything

Happiness created together has a way of multiplying.

One person relaxes. Another begins to laugh. Somebody tells the story everyone has heard before. The drinks get refilled, the hours stretch out and suddenly an ordinary day feels like exactly where we were all meant to be.

This is how we build a life we do not want to escape from. We stop saving beauty for someday and begin placing it gently into the life we are already living.

The good glasses are for us. The flowers are for us. The comfortable corner, the beautiful food and the leisurely afternoon are for us.

We are the occasion.

Create your own day for being

Invite the people who allow you to exhale. Ask everyone to bring one delicious thing. Choose a comfortable place and give the day more time than you think it needs.

Add one small touch that elevates the experience. A beautiful tray. Cloth napkins. A favourite playlist. Fresh fruit floating in the water. A bowl of flowers gathered from the garden.

Then lounge as though simply being together is the most worthwhile thing on your calendar.

Because perhaps it is.

Happiness is created in ordinary moments like these. Then, little by little, happiness becomes a habit.

Let’s chat about the happiness habit you want to develop and how you can begin creating it.

Until we chat again,
